There has been all kinds of panic and digital gnashing of teeth on Twitter and blogs about this. The biggest news in the web technology world this week is that Google has decided to shut-down Google Reader effective July 1. He's okay now, but it was a stressful evening that didn't end until 2am. So off to the emergency clinic we went for x-rays and doggie stomach pumping. When I came back in the house the garbage bin was knocked over and all of the chicken bones were gone. While I was driving to the next town in the power outage my younger dog, Max, decided to help himself to chicken wing bones from the garbage. I scrambled, drove 15 miles to the next town where I was able to finally get some Internet access on my phone to tell people what had happened. The outage even took out the cell tower nearest to me. The second one hit a snag when the power went out all over my town just ten minutes before the start time. This week I started three new Practical Ed Tech webinars. The week can be summarized in three parts power outage, chicken bones, and Google Reader. It was a busy week here at the Free Technology for Teachers world headquarters. While functional, Cryptocat for Mac's dated interface and lack of users make it a less desirable option for those looking for an encrypted chat program.Good morning from Greenwood, Maine where the sun is shining and the snow is melting. The program would not be useful for those looking to find other users for chatting but those with existing contacts could use the application to chat in a separate area. Once we were in the lobby, there were no other users available, which was a disappointment. A simple button for this option would have been useful. To enter the chat lobby, the user must physically type that into the network bar. The program states that all chat entries are encrypted and not saved, which makes it attractive for those concerned about privacy issues. Users can set up their own chat rooms to send to their friends or enter a lobby area where they can supposedly link up with random users. The application's interface was dated and difficult to interpret. There were no user instructions available, and it was not clear if there was any technical support. Cryptocat for Mac purports to keep chat information encrypted, but its absence of other users makes it an ineffective choice for most.Īs with most Mac App downloads, Cryptocat for Mac installed quickly and without any issues. Users who have privacy concerns with major chat program providers may want an alternative that protects their information.
